How To Do the Tai Chi Opening Movement Commencement Form

Beginners Tai Chi Form
Who can benefit from this?

The Opening Movement, also known as the Commencement Form, is one of the most important foundations in Tai Chi. Whether you’re just beginning your journey or returning to the basics, this form teaches you how to stand with intention, align your breath, and connect to the ground beneath you.

🌿 Why the Opening Movement Matters

Tai Chi isn’t just about flowing movements—it starts with stillness. The Opening Movement sets the tone for the entire practice. It’s where we build posture, calm the mind, and center the breath.

This simple-yet-profound sequence helps:

  • Improve posture and balance
  • Increase focus and energy flow
  • Develop the mind–body connection
  • Release tension and prepare for deeper forms

🧍 How to Find Your Tai Chi Stance

Begin by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart. Feel the weight evenly distributed between both legs. Soften your knees slightly and let your arms hang naturally at your sides. Your spine should be upright, your head lifted gently, and your eyes looking forward with a soft gaze.

💨 Breathing with Awareness

Breathe deeply through your nose and exhale through your mouth. With each breath, imagine your body rooting into the earth while your upper body lifts gently toward the sky. This “rooting and rising” dynamic is central to Tai Chi.

👐 Performing the Opening Movement

From your stance, slowly raise both arms forward to shoulder height as you inhale. Keep the elbows soft and the wrists relaxed. As you exhale, gently lower the arms back down, as if you’re pressing through water.

This movement represents the beginning of all things—a return to balance and harmony.

🧘 Mindset & Intention

The Opening Movement is a ritual. It signals your transition from daily life into a space of mindful movement. Take this time to tune into your breath and your body, letting go of distractions.

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step—and in Tai Chi, that step is the Opening Movement.”
